While many parents make it a point to teach their children good dental habits, sometimes bad ones that develop are overlooked.
The following 5 habits may actually be harming your child's dental health:
1. Poor Brushing Habits
Good dental care begins early and allows you to prevent the development of poor dental habits. Some of the first few dental habits you teach your child are brushing and flossing. Unfortunately, if they’re too rough when they brush, it can do great damage to their tooth enamel.
2. Thumb Sucking
When thumb sucking becomes a regular habit it can cause the teeth to shift forward and misalign the bite. This can lead to future problems with speaking and chewing, which may lead to the need for orthodontic treatment.
3. Nail Biting
Biting nails can damage a child's fragile tooth enamel, resulting in teeth sensitivity by exposing the delicate root of the damaged tooth.
4. Eating Toothpaste
Children's toothpaste is often made to taste good to help promote brushing in kids, but often time kids end up swallowing the toothpaste due to it tasting good. Excessive intake of fluoride through swallowing can cause fluorosis, causing permanent brown spots on the teeth.
5. Skipping Regular Check-ups
Regular dental check-ups are the foundation of good dental care. Routine check-ups can help prevent future dental problems and detect any issues as they arise. It is recommended children visit the dentist twice a year.
